據統計，新冠疫情暴發後，該詞的使用率較2019年增加了60倍，詞典編纂者稱，在2020年間，柯林斯記錄到“封鎖”一詞的使用次數超過25萬次，遠高於2019年時的4000次。
根據該詞典，“封鎖”的定義是“對旅行，社交活動和公共空間的使用施加嚴格限制。”
柯林斯詞典語言內容顧問紐斯戴德表示，語言的使用反映了我們周遭的世界，選擇“封鎖”作爲年度詞彙，是因爲它濃縮了數十億人的共同經歷，“這不是一個值得慶祝的年度詞彙，但它可能概括了世界上大多數國家的一年”。
